History
Grunge took shape in Seattle and the surrounding Pacific Northwest scene in the mid-1980s. Seattle’s own music history timeline places a grunge breakthrough in 1986 with the Deep Six compilation, which showcased the new punk-metal hybrid, while AllMusic describes the style as a fusion of heavy metal and punk rooted in the independent ethos of early hardcore. (seattle.gov) The sound broke into the mainstream in the early 1990s, with Nirvana’s Nevermind helping turn a local underground into a global reference point.
