Klezmer

Description

Klezmer music is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. It is characterized by its expressive melodies reminiscent of the human voice, often incorporating elements of dance music, and is typically played by ensembles featuring instruments like the violin, clarinet, accordion, and cymbalom.

History

Klezmer originated in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, particularly in the regions that are now Poland, Ukraine, and Romania. It was traditionally played at weddings and other celebrations. The genre evolved as Jewish immigrants brought it to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, where it absorbed influences from American jazz and other popular music styles. After a decline in popularity, Klezmer experienced a revival in the 1970s and 1980s, both in the United States and Europe.
