Pagode
Description
Pagode is a Brazilian music genre and subgenre of samba, known for its lively rhythms, acoustic instrumentation, and themes drawn from everyday life, love, friendship, and community. It often features instruments such as the banjo with a cavaquinho neck, tan-tan, repique de mão, pandeiro, and cavaquinho itself.
History
Pagode originated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a subgenre of samba, emerging from informal samba gatherings called 'pagodes' in the suburbs and favelas. It became widely known after artists such as Beth Carvalho recorded songs by musicians associated with the genre. Over time, pagode diversified into styles including more romantic and commercially oriented forms, while maintaining roots in samba and Afro-Brazilian cultural expression.
