An Act of Treason is the AI-assisted music project of UK songwriter Stuart Bedford, built around a simple idea: human stories, human songwriting, and new technology used as a creative production tool. Bedford has spent more than fifteen years developing his craft as a songwriter. The lyrics, concepts, themes and structures are his own, while AI is used to help realise arrangements and production beyond what he could previously create alone. The latest album, Solo Levelling, combines chiptune, punk and alternative rock with 16-bit game aesthetics. Beneath the arcade sounds, the record explores ADHD, depression, recovery, relationships, family, identity and self-worth. The project is also deliberately self-aware about AI itself. One track, “Algorithm”, questions the role of generative technology while using that same technology in its creation. An Act of Treason is less about replacing the artist with AI than exploring what happens when an experienced songwriter gains a new set of tools.
