A useful plugin collection should cover distinct production jobs rather than repeat the same function five times. Equalization, saturation, reverb, synthesis, and mastering each solve a different problem. These five tools cover that range.
EQ and saturation
FabFilter Pro-Q 3 is built for precise equalization. Its features include dynamic EQ, mid-side processing, spectrum analysis, and linear phase processing. Those tools make it useful for removing unwanted frequencies, creating space between tracks, and making controlled mastering adjustments.
The original vocal example uses a high-pass filter at 100Hz, a cut around 250Hz, a small boost around 3kHz, and a high shelf around 10kHz. Those settings are not a universal vocal preset. They illustrate a common sequence of removing unnecessary low end, reducing muddiness, adding presence, and then adjusting the upper range.
Soundtoys Decapitator handles a different job. It adds saturation, harmonics, warmth, and grit to material that feels too clean.

Saturation is useful when the source already works musically but needs more character. That can apply to vocals, drums, instruments, or generated audio.
Reverb and synthesis
Valhalla VintageVerb gives producers control over perceived space. A dry sound can feel close and exposed, while reverb can place it further back or make it feel larger. The plugin covers spaces ranging from tighter rooms to large halls and adds a vintage character.
Xfer Records Serum is a wavetable synthesizer rather than an audio processor. Its wavetable editor, modulation system, filters, and built-in effects let producers design sounds rather than only process recordings.
That makes Serum especially useful in electronic production, where sound design can be part of composition itself. A patch can suggest a melody or rhythm, while the needs of the track can push the producer toward different modulation and filter choices.
Mastering with iZotope Ozone
iZotope Ozone covers the final stage in this five-plugin setup. It is a mastering suite with tools that can analyze a track and, in the versions described by the source, provide AI-assisted starting points for processing.
An automated suggestion is still only a starting point. The producer has to decide whether the result fits the track.
Together, Pro-Q 3, Decapitator, VintageVerb, Serum, and Ozone cover five recurring jobs without pretending one plugin can do everything. The useful setup is the one where each tool has a clear purpose and the producer knows when it is needed.
