History

The label “dark jazz” appears to have crystallized around a small European scene rather than a single clean origin point. Bohren & der Club of Gore are widely cited as a key reference: they formed in 1992, and later coverage describes their music with terms such as dark jazz, doom jazz, and ambient jazz noir. The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, formed in 2000, also helped define the sound by composing music for silent films and blending jazz instrumentation with atmosphere and electronics.
