History

Malaysian Tamil popular music has a longer history than its hip-hop branch, so there is no single founding date for this combined category. A recognisable Malaysian Tamil hip-hop current developed during the 1990s and expanded in the 2000s alongside Malaysia's broader hip-hop scene, with artists such as Yogi B helping bring Tamil rap into a more prominent regional popular-music context. Later artists including Psychomantra, Sasi The Don and Havoc Brothers developed different combinations of rap, melodic pop, electronic production and Tamil-language songwriting. Academic research on Malaysian Tamil hip-hop has highlighted frequent code-switching between Tamil, Malay and English, reflecting both Malaysian multilingualism and the music's connections to wider Tamil and international hip-hop cultures.
