History
Christian metal emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s alongside other Christian rock scenes, as bands began using metal’s forceful language for openly religious lyrics and imagery. MusicBrainz classifies it as a subgenre of metal, and AllMusic frames it as gospel music’s hard rock; in practice, it grew by folding Christian identity into existing metal styles rather than forming a completely separate musical grammar. Stryper is the clearest early landmark in the style’s history: the band formed in Southern California in 1983, became known for its yellow-and-black visual identity and evangelical lyrics, and helped prove that Christian metal could reach a mainstream audience. Their 1986 album To Hell with the Devil is still treated as a defining release, and later bands such as Tourniquet pushed the music further into thrash and progressive territory while keeping the same lyrical commitments.
