Hardbass
Also known as Russian hardbass, Хардбасс
Saint Petersburg's hyperactive answer to pumping house pairs relentless kicks and metallic bass with rave energy, chants and a heavy dose of internet-era irreverence.

Origins and context
Hardbass emerged from Saint Petersburg's rave and pumping-house scene before becoming intertwined with satirical representations of gopnik culture. Its precise inception is fuzzy because the transition from pumping house into Hardbass occurred gradually around the turn of the millennium.

History
Hardbass emerged from the late-1990s and early-2000s electronic dance underground of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Producers drew heavily from pumping house and related hard dance styles, increasing tempos and emphasizing the metallic, bouncing bass sound that became one of Hardbass's clearest sonic signatures. The transition from Russian pumping house into a separately named Hardbass style was gradual, so there is no universally agreed single founding track or exact inception year. XS Project, formed in Saint Petersburg in 2002, became one of the genre's best-known early projects and recorded Hardbass and aggressive pumping-house material during the 2000s. The style reached a much wider internet audience around 2010 when Hardbass videos parodying stereotypical gopnik culture spread through Russia and Eastern Europe. Later artists and online communities transformed the combination of fast electronic music, tracksuits, squatting dances and exaggerated Slavic imagery into an internationally recognizable internet subculture, while the underlying musical genre continued independently of the meme.
