Intelligent dance music

Also known as IDM, Intelligent Dance Music, electronica

A broad, slightly controversial tag for detailed electronic music that grew around Warp's early-1990s catalog and online discussion. The name is imperfect, but the music under it remains some of the most inventive headphone electronic music of its era.

How to listen

Start here

  • Start with the melodic clarity of Aphex Twin's Xtal, then move to Autechre's Incunabula for the more angular, beat-minded side of the style.

History

The term came into wider use in the early 1990s around online discussions of Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence compilation and the artists clustered around it. Warp's Artificial Intelligence release appeared on July 6, 1992, and its liner-note framing helped define a strain of electronic music aimed at home listening as much as the dancefloor. Autechre and Aphex Twin became two of the clearest touchstones for the sound and its reputation. Autechre's 1993 debut Incunabula is repeatedly cited as a key early release in the style, while Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 85-92 helped show how atmospheric, detailed electronic production could feel spacious and direct at the same time.
